The new women's professional soccer league was launched in September and is expected to begin in Spring of 2009. They have decided to call it Women's Professional Soccer (WPS). They have just launched their website and created a logo for the league.
So far there is an are seven teams located in Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York/New Jersey, Washington, D.C. and St. Louis, and the opportunity for an eighth team is open.
As the league gets closer to start-up, there is much excitement from all different audiences. Future players are preparing for try-outs, fans are excited to be able to watch a women's pro-league. Young girls are dreaming bigger, knowing that the opportunity for them to play past collegiate soccer is a reality, and finally sports professionals are jumping on the opportunity to work within the new league.
One might ask how PR is relevant. The women's professional soccer league is like a new product. It needs to be marketed, pitched, and publicized to reach many different audiences. WUSA, the first women's league launched in 2001 and had to suspend its operations in 2003. With the lack of success from the first women's league, I believe that PR, marketing, and advertising are going to play a big role in this new league. Commissioner Tonya Antonucci speaks about generating media coverage for Women's Professional Soccer.

Yay! It is always exciting to have another women's professional sport. Sadly though, my boyfriend and I watch ESPN pretty much everyday and I have not heard anything about this at all. It will be interesting to see how they will market and publicize this new organization/product!!
