Dell Comes to Class

This past week we had Richard Binhammer, from Dell Corporate Group Communications, and John Pope, Digital Media Senior Manager, come and talk to our class. We got great insight into what they get to do at Dell. Instead of working on traditional media, they search and read hundreds of blogs a day that pertain to Dell. They respond to people who are having trouble, or dissatisfied with their Dell product. Dell has entered the social media world and they are taking advantage of the opportunity to reach consumers through multiple media outlets.

It is great to know that big companies, like Dell, are getting involved with this new technology and taking advantage of the benefits social media has to offer. Even still, not very many companies are using social media. Most companies are scared of getting involved with blogging and other social media elements because they will not be in total control. Once, the information is sent into the web it becomes fair game for anyone to pick up and talk about, and forever be indexed in the Internet. Even still, the benefits outweigh the negatives. Hopefully, companies will realize the benefits social media can offer them and begin to get involved.

I just posted about the predicted growth of social media (http://emily4352.blogspot.com/2008/04/web-20-predictions.html), and it looks like companies are jumping on the Web2.0 bandwagon. It does seem backwards to me that the larger companies, like Dell, are the ones doing the bulk of the social media push. Social media could be such a great tool for small business with a small or startup budget to reach a large audience, and the large companies have so many long established options.
